AOTM: Bruce Springsteen’s Autobiography ‘Born to Run’ is Nominated for a Grammy

Bruce Springsteen has received numerous awards throughout his career . MTV Music Awards, People’s Choice Awards, Academy Awards, Kennedy Honors, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom are all under his belt. The singer-songwriter is also no stranger to the Grammy Awards.  This year, Springsteen released his autobiography Born to Run. The book landed him in the top spot on the New York Times Bestseller List, and Springsteen is now up for a Grammy Award with it.

History of the Grammy Awards

The Grammy Awards spawned from the Hollywood Walk of Fame project in the 1950s. The committee selected to create the Walk of Fame and decide who would receive star recognition were selected by the President of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at the time, E.M. Stuart. Among the committee members were music executives. The music executives realized there were far more people in the music industry who were leaders than those that would qualify for a star on the Walk of Fame. The music industry didn’t have its own yearly peer awards like the Oscars and Emmys, thus began the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which is now called The Recording Academy.  The first Grammy Award ceremony was held in 1959 and 28 Grammys were given out. Over the years, the amount of awards and the categories have changed, but its recognition of achievement in the music industry has not.

Bruce Springsteen’s 2018 nomination

Some may wonder how Bruce Springsteen qualifies for a Grammy Award for  his autobiography, however, the artist not only created a companion CD of songs to go along with the book, he also created an audio version of it. This audio version qualifies for the Best Spoken Word category at the 2018 Grammy Awards. The Best Spoken Word category includes poetry, audio books, and storytelling; and Bruce Springsteen isn’t the only one nominated. Carrie Fisher, Bernie Sanders and Mark Ruffalo, Shelley Peiken, and Neil De Grasse Tyson are nominated as well. to find out who will officially win in this category, people will need to watch the Grammy Awards on January 28, 2018.
