AOTM: A Bee Gees Musical is in the Works

Started in 1958, the Bee Gees consisted of brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb.  The band enjoyed consistent success throughout their career with their own music and music they wrote for others. Multiple awards and millions of albums sold highlight a band that has longevity and made a mark in the music industry. Now, the Bee Gees are getting their own musical.

Announced in 2017, Universal Theatrical Group (UTG) secured rights to the band’s music and their life story.  Surviving brother Barry Gibb, Yvonne Gibb (Maurice’s wife), and the estate of Robin Gibb gave approval of the project with Barry executive producing the musical. Barry Gibb said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for our family. It’s another adventure for us and a chance to throw the spotlight on all my brothers and finally the real story of us will be told ( The musical isn’t the first of its kind and is one of many upcoming Broadway shows about music acts.

In order to go ahead, the project needed the green light by all parties involved.  Not only did the Gibb brothers have to give approval, Universal Music Group – which represents all the Bee Gees catalog – also had a say in the project. Jimmy Horowitz, President of Universal Pictures, made the announcement about the project and said they look forward to bringing “We thank Barry, Yvonne and Dwina Gibb and our longtime collaborator Sir Lucian Grainge and the Universal Music Group who have played a vital role in creating this opportunity, and we look forward to bringing some of the best music ever written to audiences in a unique and thrilling live stage musical (” One of the most successful bands in music will see its history and music brought to life on Broadway. There is no set date yet on when the musical will be completed; however, it is expected to be as successful as the Bee Gees career.

The Bee Gees have made a mark in the music industry and are now expected to make a mark on Broadway with their own musical that chronicles their life and music. Completion dates have not been set, though, for the production so fans will need to wait a bit before seeing their favorite band’s story live on stage.
